NO. 50 WOMEN'S TENNIS RUNS CONFERENCE WIN STREAK TO 59 MATCHES WITH PAIR OF TRIUMPHS

POCATELLO, Idaho – The No. 50 ranked Sacramento State women’s tennis team defeated Weber State in morning and Idaho State in the afternoon, running their conference win streak to 59 straight matches.

With the victories, the Hornets also improved their record to 14-8 overall and 7-0 in Big Sky play.

In the Hornets victory over Weber State, Sacramento State swept all nine matches contested on the day. In doubles action, the No. 78 ranked tandem of sophomore Melissa Valenzuela and junior All-American Katrina Zheltova had no trouble at the No. 1 position, defeating Caroline Drugge and Brittiny Moore, 8-1. Redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca and senior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez took down Greyce Farias and Keya Jenkins by a count of 8-5, while freshman Maria Meliuk and junior Aileen Tsan posted an 8-3 victory over Elsje Beneke and Karlie Hancock, giving the Hornets the doubles sweep and a 1-0 lead.

In singles action against the Wildcats, the Hornets won all six matches contested in straight sets, accounting for the 7-0 victory. Zheltova posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jenkins at No. 1 singles to pace the Hornets, while Meliuk no problem with Farias, defeating her 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Tsan took down Moore at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Baca triumphed over Hancock, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot in the order. At the No. 6 position, Martinez Gutierrez collected a 6-2, 6-0 win over Beneke.

The hardest fought match came at the No. 3 spot, as Valenzuela held off Drugge, 7-6, 7-6, in back-to-back sets that went to a tiebreak.

In the afternoon match between the Hornets and Idaho State, Sacramento State took home a 7-0 victory. Idaho State played shorthanded, being forced to default two singles matches and one doubles affair.

Once again, the Hornets swept all of the matches contested, as Baca and Martinez teamed up at No. 1 doubles to take down Lisel Lewis and Stephanie Roldan 8-3, while Meliuk and Tsan moved up to No. 2 doubles, defeating Sophie Dang and Risa Fujiwara by a score of 8-1.

In singles play, Zheltova was victorious 6-1, 6-1 over Lewis at No. 1 singles, while Valenzuela took home a 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-5) victory over Dang at the No. 2 singles position. Tsan posted an easy 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles over Roldan, while Baca closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory Fujiwara.
