NO. 34 WOMEN'S TENNIS DOWNS QUAKERS 6-1

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 34 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team defeated the Pennsylvania Quakers by a score of 6-1 in a neutral site matchup at Fresno State's Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center on Saturday, March 14.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 9-4 overall, while the Quakers fell to 1-8.

The Hornets started the match with a 3-0 sweep of the doubles matches, earning the doubles point to take a 1-0 match lead. The doubles encounters finished in positional order, as the No. 1 tandem of sophomore Melissa Valenzuela and senior Luba Schifris took down Maria Anisimova and Lauren Sadaka, 8-2, and the No. 2 duo of redshirt freshman Clarisse Baca and senior Joyce Martinez Gutierrez clinched the point with an 8-3 victory over Alexa Ely and Jacqueline Wong. The final doubles match saw the tandem of freshman Maria Meliuk and junior Aileen Tsan defeat Jordyn Shaffer and Emily Wolf by a count of 8-3.

In singles play, the Hornets won five of the six matches, with the lone defeat coming by way of retirement. Martinez Gutierrez, who was forced to retire in her previous three singles matches due to injury, got the Hornets started with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jacqueline Wong at the No. 6 position. From there, Schifris made short work of Sadaka at the No. 3 position, winning 6-1, 6-1.

No. 1 player Tsan was forced to retire in the first set with the score tied at 5-5 against Ekaterina Kosminskaya, pulling the Quakers to within two at 3-1. But the Hornets would soon after get the clinching point at the No. 2 position, as Meliuk took down Anisimova, 6-2, 6-1 to seal the Sacramento State victory.

Finishing out the match, Baca defeated Ely at the No. 4 position, improving her season mark to 9-3, while Valenzuela hung on to defeat Wolf, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, giving the Hornets the 6-1 win.

Sacramento State returns to action in Fresno on Sunday as the face the host Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 37 in the nation, at 11 a.m.
