WOMEN'S TENNIS BATTLES, BUT FALLS TO NO. 3 STANFORD
4/9/2008
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 44 ranked Sacramento State women's tennis team took three singles matches to the super tiebreak, but fell to the third ranked Stanford Cardinal by a score of 7-0 on Wednesday, April 9.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 19-5, while the Cardinal improve to 16-4.
Doubles competition between the two top-50 teams was fierce, as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions were decided by close margins. Sophomore Katrina Zheltova and freshman Melissa Valenzuela nearly pulled off the upset over the No. 17 ranked tandem of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette at No. 1 doubles before falling 8-6. At the No. 3 position, sophomore Aileen Tsan and junior Anastassia Lyssenko also dropped a tough 8-6 decision to the Cardinal duo of Celia Durkin and Carolyn McVeigh.
On the singles side of the ledger, the Hornets could not pull off an upset victory against the Cardinal, but three matches went to the third set super tiebreak. At the No. 4 position, junior Luba Schifris won the first set, but dropped the match to No. 93 ranked Burdette, falling 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8). A similar story could be found at the No. 3 spot, where Lyssenko won the first set, but fell to Durkin of the Cardinal 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
The hardest fought and longest of the day's singles matches took place at the No. 5 position, where No. 68 McVeigh outlasted Hornet junior Karina Jarlkaganova 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (12-10).
Sacramento State will close out the season with a trip to No.5 California on Sunday, April 13. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
