4/8/2008
OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State sophomore Katrina Zheltova has been named the Big Sky Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for matches played the week of April 1-8.
Zheltova, the No. 45 ranked singles player in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, went undefeated last week after returning to the Hornets’ lineup for the first time in seven matches after an injury. The native of Minsk, Belarus helped No. 48-ranked Sacramento State to three wins, including a 6-1 upset victory over No. 37 Saint Mary’s.
In a 6-1 victory over San Francisco, Zheltova beat Jennifer Lee 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4) at the No. 1 singles spot. She also picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 1 over Jessica Hoath in the upset win over the Gaels on Sunday.
The Hornets also defeated Cal State Bakersfield 6-1 on Sunday but Zheltova did not compete in singles. She combined with doubles partner freshman Melissa Valenzuela for three match victories last week at the No. 1 position.
The award marks Zheltova's seventh career conference honor, and the third she has earned in 2008.
The Hornets return to action on April 9, as they travel to No. 5 ranked Stanford. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
