WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO NO. 1 STANFORD IN FINAL TUNEUP FOR BIG SKY TOURNEY

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 62 Sacramento State women¹s tennis team was swept, 7-0, at No. 1 Stanford on Thursday afternoon, in its final match before the Big Sky Championships.

The Cardinal, with six players ranked in the nation¹s top 50, improve to 23-0 as the Hornets fall to 12-8.

Sacramento State No. 1 singles player, Margarita Karnaukhova kept pace with 17th-ranked Amber Liu, winning the first set 6-3, before falling, 7-5 and 10-8.

Freshman Luba Schifris fell at the No.2 spot, 6-1, 6-1 to seventh-ranked Alice Barnes. At the No.3 spot, Joyce Martinez Gutierrez was defeated by sixth-ranked Therese Logar, 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 4 singles, Sacramento State’s Karina Jarlkaganova lost to 48th-ranked Whitney Deason, 6-1, 6-0. Hornet junior Cecilia Helland battled Lejla Hodzic at the No. 5 spot, before falling 7-5, 6-1. Freshman Anastassia Lyssenko also was defeated, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot to 65th-ranked Jessica Nguyen.

Stanford also swept the doubles point.

Sacramento State, which went 6-0 in the Big Sky Conference regular season, will next play in the postseason tournament beginning on Thursday, April 27, hosted by Idaho State. The Hornets have won four straight conference championships.
