SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 58 Sacramento State women’s tennis team dropped a close match, 4-3, against Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis center on Sunday afternoon.The Hornets are now 12-7 on the season and will finish their regular season on Thursday with a match against No. 1 ranked Stanford.
Washington took an early advantage winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
In singles competition, senior Margarita Karnaukhova defeated Victoria Brymer 6-4, 6-3. Junior Cecilia Helland, who is now 14-5 on the season, earned a victory at the No. 5 spot with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Melinda Wong.
Sacramento State picked up its third point at the No. 6 spot, winning by default.
Freshmen Luba Schifris and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez dropped their respective matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by scores of 6-2, 6-2. In the longest match of the day and what proved to be the most pivotal, freshman Karina Jarlkaganova fell to Washingont’s Stephanie Svanfeldt, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4.
