WOMEN'S TENNIS FALLS TO NO. 21 FRESNO STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In a match that could have been much closer than the final score indicated, the 21st-ranked Fresno State women''s tennis team defeated No. 52 Sacramento State 7-0, Saturday afternoon in Sacramento, Calif.

The Hornets (12-6) four-match winning streak was snapped, while the Bulldogs (13-6) won their fifth straight.

While Fresno State swept the six singles matches, four were taken to three sets.

At the No. 1 spot, the Bulldogs Melanie Gloria, who is currently ranked 21st in the nation, needed three sets to defeat Sacramento State’s Margarita Karnaukhova, 6-4, 6-7 (10), 6-3.

Hornet freshman Joyce Martinez Gutierrez took Fresno State’s Lucia Sainz to three sets at the No. 3 spot, but Sainz handed Martinez Gutierrez just her third loss of the season, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Junior Cecilia Helland suffered her fifth loss of the season at the No. 5 spot, with a 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 loss to Magdalena Tokarska. At the No. 6 spot, freshman Anastassia Lyssenko fell to Bruna Praes, 6-7 (4), 6-2, (11-9).

The Bulldogs also took the doubles point, recording victories in all three matches.
