WOMEN’S TENNIS WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT WITH 7-0 VICTORY OVER WEBER STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The 49th-ranked Sacramento State women’s tennis team won its fifth straight match with a 7-0 victory over Weber State on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hornets improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the Big Sky Conference. The Wildcats fall to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in league.

After Sacramento State swept the doubles matches, No. 1 singles player Margarita Karnaukhova handled Weber State’s Elana Smit, 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 2 spot, Luba Schifris won her sixth match of the year with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Alexandra Ilie.

Freshman Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, the current Big Sky Player of the Week, won her fourth consecutive match, defeating Inaalise Pienaar, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 3 spot.

Freshman Karina Jarlkaganova needed three sets to defeat the Wildcats’ Karla Pretorius 6-2, 2-6, 10-6, in the No. 4 spot and the Hornets’ Cecilia Helland won her ninth match of the year with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ashley Schlager.

Svetlana Pimenova in the No. 6 spot defeated Gabriela Venditto, 6-1, 6-0 for the sweep. The Hornets next host New Mexico at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
