The Sacramento State women’s tennis team began the defense of its Big Sky crown on Saturday, defeating Northern Arizona 5-2 in the team’s conference opener at the Sedona Racquet Club.The Hornets took the doubles point to start things off with senior Margarita Karnaukhova and freshman Anastassia Lyssenko teaming to defeat the Lumberjacks’ Paij Porter and Katie Schurr 8-3 in the No. 1 spot. Freshman Svetlana Pimenova and junior Cecilia Helland then earned an 8-6 victory over Stacey Pinchbeck and Georgie Mills in the No. 3 spot.
Karnaukhova then earned her second victory of the afternoon in the No. 1 singles spot, defeating Northern Arizona’s Susan McClelland 6-0, 6-0.
Sacramento State took four of the six singles matches from the Lumberjacks, with freshman Karina Jarlkaganova winning 6-4, 6-3 in the No.2 spot and Helland earning a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Porter in the No. 4 spot.
Pimenova was victorious in the No. 6 spot, with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Regan Newman, while in the No. 5 spot, Lyssenko withdrew after suffering an ankle injury.
Sacramento State is now 3-3 and will next play Loyola Marymount on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. start at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
