SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For the fourth-consecutive year, Sacramento State head coach Bill Campbell received Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year honors after guiding the women''s tennis team to a program-record tying 23-4 overall record, including the squad''s fourth-straight Big Sky championship.The Hornets, who travel to Provo, Utah, to take on BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 13, had a program-record six players named to the all-conference team yesterday. Four of those players were named first team all-Big Sky, including Margarita Karnaukhova, who became the first Big Sky female athlete (in any sport) to earn three-straight conference Most Valuable Player awards. This season''s team also shattered the Big Sky record with eight league player of the week awards (including four for Karnaukhova).
Currently ranked 36th in the nation, Sacramento State posted a 6-0 record against Big Sky competition in the regular season and then swept both Montana and Weber State in the Big Sky Tournament to gain the league''s automatic berth into the NCAA''s postseason event. For the second time in program history, the Hornets also have three ranked players, comprised of Karnaukhova (No. 22), Anna Erikson (No. 103) and Cecilia Helland (No. 109). The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranks the top 75 Div. I teams and the top 125 Div. I singles players.
Campbell becomes the first women''s tennis coach in league history to win the award four-straight seasons as the Hornets have combined for an 82-20 record over the past four seasons. A graduate of Sacramento State, Campbell took over as head coach in 1999. Since that time, the program has seen remarkable improvement; 1-15 in 1999, 5-15 in 2000, 11-10 in 2001, 20-4 in 2002, 16-8 in 2003, 23-4 in 2004 and 23-4 this season. In seven seasons with the Hornets, Campbell has compiled a 99-60 record and his teams have won 25-consecutive conference matches dating back to the 2002 season.
Sacramento State, which posted a 6-4 record against ranked opposition this year, will enter the NCAA Tournament as winners of 20 of its last 21 matches, including a victory over 25th-ranked Washington on April 1.
