OGDEN, Utah - Sophomore Anna Karaveyeva was named Big Sky Conference women’s tennis Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. The award marks the first time in her career she has won the award. The award also extends Sacramento State’s and the Big Sky record to eight for the most player of the week awards given to a school in a season.Karaveyeva, a native of Kiev, Ukraine, helped lead No. 34 Sacramento State to three wins last weekend in wrapping up the team’s Big Sky season. On Friday against UC Santa Barbara, she defeated Leslie Damion, 6-2, 6-2. On Saturday against Northern Arizona, she defeated Sheena Lister 6-1, 6-1 in the morning, and then defeated Montana’s Jonna Schwartz 6-0, 6-1 in the afternoon. Kareveyeva is 16-8 on the season.
No. 34 Sacramento State returns to action in the Big Sky Semifinals on Friday, April 29 in Phoenix, Ariz. The Hornets will face the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals. Sacramento State is 21-4 on the year and finished 6-0 in Big Sky play. The team has won 23-consecutive matches against conference competition and the squad did not lose an individual single''s or doubles''s match against a league oppenent this year.
