SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The No. 35 Sacramento State women’s tennis team did not drop a single match in a pair of 7-0 sweeps of Northern Arizona and Montana, Saturday afternoon at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. With the win, the Hornets improve to 21-4 on the season and with a perfect 6-0 mark in the Big Sky Conference, Sacramento State has clinched the Big Sky regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the Big Sky Tournament, April 28-30 in Phoenix, Ariz. The pair of wins also extended Sacramento State’s Big Sky consective-winning streak to 23 matches.In the morning against NAU, Sacramento State opened the day by sweeping the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, junior Margarita Karnaukhova and sophomore Anna Karaveyeva won an 8-2 decision over Julie Schmandt and Susan McClelland. At the two, sophomore Anna Erikson and freshman Klara Petersson swept Katie Schurr and Ashley Hunt, 8-0. At three, seniors Roberta Fessenko and Cristina Rivieccio defeated Ashley Dille and Sheena Lister, 8-1
In singles action, Karnaukhova, ranked No. 21 in the nation, won her match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Schmandt. At the two, Fessenko defeated Shurr, 6-1, 6-2. At the three, Petersson had to go to a super-tiebreak in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 win over McClelland. At the four, sophomore Cecilia Helland, ranked No. 72, swept Dille, 6-0, 6-0. At the five, Karaveyeva won her match, defeating Lister 6-1, 6-1. At the six, Rivieccio defeated Georgie Mills, 6-0, 6-2.
In the afternoon against the Grizzlies, the Hornets did not drop a doubles match and claimed the point. At the one, Karnaukhova and Karaveyeva defeated Annabelle Janairo and Mari Castello, 8-0. At the two, Erikson and Petersson defeated Colby Fannin and Cheyne Ursich, 8-1. At the three, Fessenko and Rivieccio defeated Jonna Schwartz and Lindsay Torgerson, 8-1.
In singles, Karnaukhova finishes the regular season with a 23-2 record with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ursich at the one. At the two, Erikson, ranked No. 75, defeated Janairo 6-2, 6-1 and is now 17-4. At the three, Fessenko closed out her home career with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Torgerson. Helland improved to 21-2 on the year as she defeated Castello, 6-1, 6-2, at the four. Karaveyeva won her match at the five with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Schwartz. At the six, Rivieccio also closed out her home career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fannin.
Sacramento State will return to action in the Big Sky semifinals against the lowest remaining seed on Friday, April 29 at the Phoenix Tennis Club.
