LOS ANGELES - The No. 32 Sacramento State women’s tennis team cruised to an easy 6-1 win over host Loyola Marymount, Sunday afternoon at LMU Tennis Center in Los Angeles. With the win, the Hornets improve to 18-4 on the year while the Lions fell to 8-13.Sacramento State opened the day by taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, junior Margarita Karnaukhova and sophomore Anna Karaveyeva won an 8-4 decision over Kimi Kaloi and Tamara Tanner. At the two, sophomore Anna Erikson and freshman Klara Petersson fell to Serena Fermin and Erin Ivey, 8-6. At three, senior Roberta Fessenko and sophomore Anna Karaveyeva defeated Carla Arguelles and Robyn Baker, 8-3.
In singles action, Karnaukhova, ranked No. 21 in the nation, improved to 20-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Arguelles. At the two, Erikson, ranked No. 75, improved to 15-4 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Fermin. Fessenko won her match at the three with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kaloi. At the four, Petersson dispatched Tanner in a 6-1, 6-3 win. At the five, Helland, ranked No. 72, had to withdraw from her match due to injury (shin splints), falling to Ivey, 6-1, ret. Helland is now 20-2 on the year as well. Karaveyeva won her match at the six, defeating Baker, 7-6, 6-0.
Sacramento State returns home to Rio Del Oro Racquet Club for the first time in nearly a month when they host UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 15. First serve against the Gauchos is set for 2 p.m. PDT. On Saturday, the Hornets will close out the regular season with a Big Sky Conference doubleheader against Northern Arizona at 9 a.m. and Montana at 2 p.m. Sacramento State looks to extend their school record 21-match conference winning streak. Prior to the Montana match, seniors’ Roberta Fessenko and Cristina Rivieccio will be honored for their contributions to the program as they make their final home appearances in a Hornet uniform.
