SEATTLE, Wash.—The No. 40 Sacramento State women’s tennis team rebounded from dropping the doubles point to claim four of the six singles matches to post an upset win over No. 19 Washington, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Stadium in Seattle, Wash. With the win, the Hornets have now won 12-straight matches and are 15-3 on the season. Today’s win over the Huskies marked the sixth-consecutive over a ranked opponent (the ITA ranks the top-75 teams in the country). The win also marked the first time the Hornets have defeated a Pac-10 institution in school history. Four singles matches went to deciding third sets with the Hornets pulling out three wins.
Washington opened the afternoon by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the point. At the one, junior Margarita Karnaukhova and sophomore Cecilia Helland fell to Dea Sumantri and Dinka Hadzic, 8-5. At the two, sophomore Anna Erikson and freshman Klara Petersson defeated Mugette Ahn and Saskia Nauenberg, 8-3. At the three, senior Roberta Fessenko and sophomore Anna Karaveyeva fell to Monika Kolbovic and Tara Simpson, 8-3.
In singles play, Karnaukhova, ranked No. 28, rebounded from dropping the first set to upsetting No. 9 Sumantri, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The win by Karnaukhova clinched the match for the Hornets. Karanaukhova is now 15-2 on the season. At the two, Erikson posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over No. 43 Hadzic. At the three, Fessenko dropped a tough three set match to Nauenberg, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6. At the four, Petersson dropped her match to Simpson, 6-2, 6-3. At the five, Karaveyeva dropped the first set in the tiebreak, but then rallied to defeat Allison Rainey, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Helland, ranked No. 65, improved her record to a team-leading 16-1 mark on the year with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stephanie Svanfeldt.
Sacramento State returns to action on Sunday as the Hornets take on No. 21 Tulane. First serve against the Green Wave is set for 10 a.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
