With the victory, the 40th-ranked Hornets won their 11th match in a row while improving to 14-3 this season. San Diego, which entered the match ranked 69th in the nation, dropped to 7-8. The victory over San Diego was also Sacramento State’s fifth straight over a ranked opponent (the ITA ranks the top 75 teams in the nation).

Sacramento State took the doubles point by winning two out of the three matches. Roberta Fessenko and Anna Karaveyeva were first off the court after beating Jenna Anderson and Helene Lindstrand at the No. 3 spot 8-2. Cecilia Helland and Margarita Karnaukhova followed with an 8-6 victory over Jenny Brown and Lauren Kazarian. San Diego’s Emma Murphy and Lauren Perl prevented a doubles sweep with their 8-2 win over Anna Erikson and Klara Petersson at the No. 2 position.

In singles, Perl managed to tie the match up at 1-1 after she defeated Petersson 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. However, Sacramento State took a commanding 3-1 lead with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions by Erikson (6-3, 6-0) and Fessenko (6-1, 6-0). Murphy trimmed the deficit to 3-2 following her upset of No. 28 Karnaukhova, 6-0, 6-3. The loss for Karnaukhova was just her second of the season as the junior dropped to 14-2 this year.

Sacramento was able to clinch the match after Helland, ranked No. 65 in the nation, took out Brown 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 position. Lindstrand lost the first set 6-4 to Karaveyeva at No. 5, but won the last two sets 6-3, 6-1 to account for the final margin.

Sacramento State returns to action on Friday, April 1, as the Hornets travel to Seattle to take on 16th-ranked Washington.
