KARNAUKHOVA AND FOY BOTH NAMED BIG SKY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OGDEN, Utah - Junior Margarita Karnaukhova and sophomore Warwick Foy were named Big Sky Conference women’s and men’s tennis Players of the Week, respectively, it was announced Wednesday by the league office. This marks the third time this season Karnaukhova has won the award and her sixth overall. This is the first time in Foy’s career that he has received honors.

Karnaukhova, currently ranked 23rd in the nation, defeated No. 66 Maja Koveck of New Mexico, 6-2, 6-4, on Sunday after defeating New Mexico State’s Isabelle Mignot 6-2, 6-1, on Saturday. With the pair of wins, she helped Sacramento State to team wins over the Lobos and Aggies and the Hornets are now 11-3 on the season, currently ranked No. 40. The Krasnodar, Russia native is now 13-1 on the year.

Foy, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, had a pair of wins for Sacramento State over the weekend as the team went 2-1 with wins over Saint Mary’s and Northern Colorado and fell to Pacific. In the loss to UOP, Foy picked up one of two Sacramento State points as he defeated Austin Kakar at the five, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Against the Gaels, Foy defeated Andre Sion, 6-7, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Foy’s record on the year now stands at 5-4.

The women return to action on Saturday, March 19 as they host a doubleheader against Eastern Washington and Cal State Northridge. First serve against the Eagles is set for 9 a.m. as the Hornets look to extend their school-record 20-consecutive wins against conference competition (3-0 this season). The match against the Matadors is set for 2 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to take place at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

The Hornet men (4-6) are next in action on Saturday as they travel to take on Weber State in Ogden. The match will be the Big Sky opener for the men. That match is set for 8 a.m. PST. On Sunday the men will travel to Pocatello, Idaho to take on Idaho State. Last year, ISU upset the Hornets in the Big Sky semifinals, ending Sacramento State’s run of three-straight conference championships.
