SACRAMENTO, Calif.– The Sacramento State women’s tennis team continued its season-long march up the International Tennis Association (ITA) rankings today by moving up to a program-best 28th in the nation.The Hornets, who are coming off a 6-1 victory over 10th-ranked Fresno State on Sunday, April 11, have moved up 28 spots in the rankings since February (when the team was 56th in the country). Sacramento State (18-3) has won 12-consecutive matches, including victories over Pepperdine (currently ranked 36th in the country), Cal Poly (T-59th) and Long Beach State (T-59th). Fresno State dropped to 13th in the nation after Sunday’s loss to Sacramento State.
The Hornets’ only losses this season have come to ranked teams, comprising of Washington (No. 8), Cal (No. 10) and Oregon (No. 34).
Sacramento State’s trio of freshman Anna Erikson (ranked 42nd), sophomore Margarita Karnaukhova (No. 78) and junior Roberta Fessenko (No. 100) should each move up the individual rankings as all three were victorious on Sunday. Karnaukhova defeated the 12th ranked player in the country (Jelena Pandzic) in straight sets. The three have combined to post a 49-8 singles record this season, including 17-1 from Erikson, 17-4 from Fessenko and 15-3 from Karnaukhova. Individual rankings will be released on Tuesday, April 20.
The Hornets, who have won each of the last two Big Sky Conference championships, travel to the state of Montana this weekend to take on Montana (Saturday, April 17) and Montana State (Sunday, April 18). Sacramento State has won 12-consecutive matches against Big Sky competition dating back to the 2002 season.
Sacramento State will compete in the Big Sky Tournament on April 29-May 2, as the team looks to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third-consecutive season.
