JONES NAMED BIG SKY TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND WEEK IN A ROW

4/7/2004

Junior Matt Jones named Big Sky Conference Tennis Player of the Week for the second time in as many weeks.
OGDEN, Utah - Sacramento State junior Matt Jones has been named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the second-consecutive week, the league office announced Wednesday. The award marks the first time that a Hornet tennis player has won the award twice in the same year since head coach Sherif Zaher accomplished the feat in 2001. Jones is also the first Hornet player to win the award two-straight weeks since Zaher accomplished it as well twice in that same season.

A native of Woodland Hills, Calif., Jones went 2-0 last week at the No. 1 singles position. In Sacramento State’s win over San Francisco, he posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Pablo Pires De Almeida. Jones also claimed the only point for the Hornets in their match at Santa Clara, as he defeated No. 54-ranked Gernot Fischer, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

With the two wins this past week, Jones has now won six-consecutive singles matches and now leads the team with an 11-6 record. Jones has also posted an 8-2 mark at the No. 3 singles spot this year as well. Two weeks ago, he helped lead the team to a fifth-place showing at the Boise State Holiday Inn Invitational. At the tournament, Sacramento State went 3-1. In the Hornets lone loss to No. 64 Cornell to open the tournament, Jones again picked up the lone Sacramento State point as he defeated Scott Spencer, 7-6, 3-6, 14-12, at the No. 3 singles position.

Sacramento State returns to action this Friday, as the Hornets continue Big Sky play as they host Eastern Washington. Sacramento State comes into the match with a 9-8 record, 1-1 in the Big Sky. The Eagles are 0-7, 0-3 overall. First serve at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club is set for 2 p.m.
