SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- 63rd-ranked Margarita Karnaukhova and the Sacramento State women''s tennis team will face No. 5 seed University of Southern California in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament, it was announced today. The Hornets and Trojans will square off on Friday, May 9, at 2 p.m., on the USC campus in Los Angeles. The winner of that match will take on the Cal Poly/Georgia Tech winner at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, in the second round.
The Sacramento State women are making their second-consecutive and second-overall NCAA appearance in school history. The Hornets, currently ranked 62nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, have established a 16-7 record overall, 3-0 in the Big Sky Conference. The 5th-ranked Trojans finished the regular season with a 19-5 record, 5-3 Pacific-10, and a fourth place finish in the Pac-10.
The winner of Friday''s first round match will face the winner of Cal Poly versus Georgia Tech on Saturday, May 10, also at USC. Last season, Sacramento State fell to Stanford, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Individual singles and doubles tournament selections will be announced on Thursday, May 1.
