WOMEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS EWU, ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS OF BIG SKY

4/26/2003

Margarita Karnaukhova
PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by 61st-ranked freshman Margarita Karnaukhova, the Sacramento State women’s tennis team swept Eastern Washington, 4-0, on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2003 Big Sky Conference Championship, hosted by Portland State. With the win, the 69th-ranked Hornets improved to 14-7 on the year.

In doubles play, Sacramento State won two of three matches to gain the point. Margarita Karnaukhova and Ann Roslund teamed up to defeat Jennifer Jolley and Marie Carroll, 8-1, and the Hornet tandem of Petra Abraham/Cristina Rivieccio defeated Stacie Pate and Lesley Liddell, 8-1. Since the Hornets had gained the doubles point, the match between Sacramento State’s Roberta Fessenko/Amanda Sanches and Eastern Washington’s Leanna Mehren/Teri Sherrill remained unfinished.

Karnaukhova rejoined the singles ladder, after eight matches on the sidelines due to an injured back, and defeated Jolley in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Fessenko defeated Eagle Carroll, 6-0, 6-1, and junior Roslund defeated Pate, 6-1, 6-1. Abraham, Sanches and Rivieccio did not finish due to the Hornets clinching the win.
