OGDEN, Utah – Sacramento State junior Petra Abraham was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for women''s tennis, the conference announced on Tuesday. This marks the third time this season that a Sacramento State women’s tennis player has been recognized with this honor. Abraham went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles play last week as the Hornets defeated Saint Mary’s and UC Santa Barbara while falling to Nevada. WIth the win, the Hornets improved to a 10-5 record.
The Budapest, Hungary, native moved up two positions to defeat Valerie Verrier of Saint Mary’s in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 4-1 (SMC ret.) in the No. 2 slot and Andrea Pintar of UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 3 position.
Abraham also paired up with teammate sophomore Cristina Rivieccio for a 3-0 record on the weekend. The pair now stands at 11-4 and has won three-consecutive doubles sets. Abraham and Rivieccio defeated Schulman/Herndon-Ortega of Saint Mary’s (8-2), Davenport/Bouchlaka of Nevada (8-2) and Kuhle/Dillon of UC Santa Barbara (8-5).
Abraham currently holds a 12-3 singles record and 11-4 doubles record for the Hornets.
The women''s tennis team will return to action on Friday, April 4, as they host UC Davis at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento, Calif. At 2 p.m.
