BOZEMAN, Mont. -- Sacramento State women''s tennis made its first appearance in the Big Sky semifinals on Saturday and came away in victorious fashion with a defeat over Weber State, 4-1. The Hornets are 2-0 against Weber State this year with both victories in the postseason. With the win, the Hornets moved on to the championship match on Sunday. Sacramento State improved its record to 19-3 overall and 4-0 in the postseason.Sacramento State had little trouble in singles play as the Hornets clinched victory after just four matches. Marta Gronowicz (No. 2), Roberta Fessenko (No. 3) and Petra Abraham (No. 4) all defeated their Weber State opponents in straight sets. Freshmen Amanda Sanches and Cristina Rivieccio did not finish their matches as the victory was clinched.
Doubles play was also dominated by Sacramento State. Gabriella Lundqvuist paired with Gronowicz at the No. 1 slot to defeat Weber State''s Therina Steenkamp/Dana DeLancey duo, 8-4. The No. 3 doubles tandem of Abraham and freshman Amanda Sanches also claimed victory and the doubles point with a score of 8-5. Fessenko and Italina Kirknis did not finish their doubles match as the point was already given to Sacramento State.
Sacramento State next takes on the winner of Northern Arizona versus Montana State in the Big Sky Conference Championship match in Bozeman, Mont., on Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. This will be their first appearance in this match in program history.
