MEN'S TENNIS DROPS FINAL HOME MATCH OF THE SEASON TO SANTA CLARA, 7-0

SACRAMENTO, Calif -- The Sacramento State men''s tennis team dropped their 2002 home finale, falling to the Santa Clara Broncos, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 5-10. This marks the first time since the 1997 season the Hornets have had 10 or more losses (9-13 that spring).

SCU won the doubles point by taking two of the three matches. For the fourth consecutive match, Sacramento State fell short of winning at least the two matches required for the point. The lone Hornet win came when senior Sherif Zaher and freshman Matthew Jones defeated Erich Chen and Rick Ruso, 8-5, at the No.1. At the two, senior Josh Price and freshman Peter Farkas were defeated by Taylor Bedilion and Mike Bruggemann, 8-5. At the No. 3 spot, senior Fabio Jesus and sophomore Nick Sheehan lost to Chris Lam and Victor Carmargo, 8-2.

In singles play, Zaher lost his match to Lam, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot. At the two, Jesus fell to Michael Duong, 6-4, 6-3. At the three, Jones was defeated by Carmargo, 6-4, 7-6. Freshman Ali Abbou lost his No. 4 position match to Chen, 6-1, 6-5. At the five, Sheehan gave Francisco Zepponi a run for his money, but fell 7-6, 6-4. At the No. 6 spot, Price fell to Federico Mattioli, 6-1, 6-1.

Sacramento State will return to action on Saturday, April 13, as they will travel to Moraga, Calif. to face the Saint Mary?s Gaels.
