MEN'S TENNIS WILL FACE UCLA IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

5/3/2001

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- For the second time in the last three seasons,

the Sacramento State men's tennis team will compete in the NCAA

Division I Tournament, as announced Thursday by the NCAA selection

committee.

The Hornets, who received an automatic berth after winning the Big

Sky Conference Tournament on April 22, will face host UCLA (20-2) in

the first round on Saturday, May 12, at the L.A. Tennis Center in Los

Angeles. The match will be played at 1 p.m. The winner of the

Saturday's match will square off against the winner of South Carolina

(12-12) and South Florida (16-7) on Sunday, May 13, at noon.

The NCAA seeds all 64 teams in the tournament as Sacramento State

received the No. 63 seed while UCLA is the No. 2 seed. The Bruins are

currently ranked third in the WingspanBank.com Collegiate Tennis

Rankings while the Hornets are ranked 74th.

Sacramento State enters the tournament with a program-best 20-2

overall record including an 18-1 mark over its final 19 matches. The

Hornets, who finished with a 7-0 Big Sky record, were crowned

conference champions for the third time in the last four years. The

team made its first and only appearance in the NCAA Div. I Tournament

in 1999 when it fell to Stanford, 4-0.

Sacramento State was the only Big Sky school selected to this year's

field of 64 teams. Top-ranked Stanford received the No. 1 seed while

UCLA (No. 2), Georgia (No. 3), Texas A&M (No. 4) and Texas Christian

(No. 5) round out the top five seeds in the tournament.
