SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The semifinal matches of the Big Sky Conference Tennis Championships were completed today as host Sacramento State and Northern Arizona each advanced to the men's championship match while Cal State Northridge and Weber State advanced to the women's championship match Sunday, April 22, at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

All matches were played outdoors today after rain forced Friday's first round matches indoors. The conference champion in both the men's and the women's draws each receive automatic berths into the NCAA Tournament.

In the men's first semifinal match of the day, host Sacramento State defeated Montana State, 4-0. After picking up the doubles point, the Hornets' Nos. 4-6 singles players Joseph Gilbert, Sylvain Iff and Nick Sheehan, respectively, each won their matches in straight sets. Sacramento State is looking for its third Big Sky title in the last four years and its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years.

In the men's second semifinal match of the day, Northern Arizona defeated Idaho State, 4-1. The Lumberjacks began the contest by winning two of the three doubles matches to gain the doubles point. Northern Arizona's Erik Karlsson (No. 3), Adrian Venturi (No. 5) and Jeff Johnson (No. 6) were each victorious in singles play while Idaho State's Malcolm Swan (No. 1) picked up the Bengals' lone point of the match.

In the women's first semifinal match of the day, Cal State Northridge cruised to a 4-0 victory over Montana. The Matadors, who are looking for their first-ever Big Sky tennis championship, won the doubles point before Nos. 4-6 singles players Tia Kaasalainen, Rani Setiawati and Shaheen Bhanji, respectively, each won their matches in straight sets. The Nos. 1-3 matches were not finished because Cal State Northridge had already accumulated the necessary four points for victory.

In the women's other semifinal, defending conference champion Weber State defeated Northern Arizona, 4-1. After picking up the doubles point, the Wildcats' Lenka Zacharova (No. 1), Therina Steenkamp (No. 2) and Dana DeLancey (No. 4) each posted singles victories. Northern Arizona's lone point came after Kathy Kmiec won at the No. 5 singles spot.

The Sacramento State/Northern Arizona men's championship match will begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. while the Cal State Northridge/Weber State women's championship match will begin at 1 p.m.
