MEN'S TENNIS SECURES NO. 1 SEED FOR THE BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Sacramento State men's tennis team defeated Northern Arizona, 5-2, in the second round of the Big Sky Conference Pacific Regionals Saturday morning at the Eastmoreland Racquet Club in Portland, Ore.

With the victory, the Hornets secure the No. 1 seed for the Big Sky Championships which take place Apr. 20-22 at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento. The team has now won 13 of its past 14 matches while improving its record to 15-2. With the loss, Northern Arizona dropped to 7-14.

As the No. 1 seed, the Hornets will receive a first-round bye at the conference championships.

Sacramento State's Nos. 3-6 singles players Chris Smith, Joseph Gilbert, Sylvain Iff and Kevin Vieira, respectively, each posted straight set victories. Smith defeated Erik Karlsson, 6-0, 6-3, while Gilbert beat Ivan Volkov, 6-0, 6-0. Vieira also won his match handily, defeating Jeff Johnson, 6-2, 6-0.

The team picked up the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Zaher teamed with Gilbert to defeat Volkov and Rodolfo Cisneros, 8-4, at No. 1. Iff and Vieira beat Karlsson and Daniel Lundstrom at No. 2, 8-4.

The Hornets wrap up Regional play tomorrow against Weber State at 9:30 a.m. Win or lose, Sacramento State still receives the No. 1 seed for the conference championships later this month.
