NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sacramento State closed its fall schedule this last weekend with a three-day tournament at CSUN. The Hornets traveled just four players from their 11-player roster for the three-day invitational.
Sacramento State traveled junior Frana Ugarkovic, who had an exceptional weekend for the Hornets, and freshmen Megan Tagaloa, Paige Alter, and Shauna Casey. The foursome combined for eight total victories over the weekend.
The Hornets really shined in doubles play over the weekend, going 4-2 in the tournament. The duo of Alter and Ugarkovic was especially dominant, winning three straight doubles contests, 7-5, 6-1, and 6-2.
The pairing of Casey and Tagaloa added the fourth doubles win, 6-4, over a team from Cal State Fullerton.
In singles play, Ugarkovic went 2-1, defeating an opponent from Cal Lutheran in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, and another from UC Riverside, again in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. In total this weekend, the junior went 2-1 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles competition.
Alter added a win for the Hornets, winning her first match of the weekend, defeating a player from CSU Los Angeles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Casey also added a Friday win, 6-3, 6-1, also against a CSU Los Angeles opponent.
Last weekend's tournament in Northridge was Sacramento State's fifth and final fall event. The fall schedule included tournaments at Cal and Saint Mary's, the ITA Regionals, and a limited invitational at Nevada.
With the fall schedule complete, Sacramento State will continue to train until the start of the regular season on Friday, Jan. 17. The Hornets play their first four matches on the road before hosting San Francisco at home on Saturday, Feb. 1.
