SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis program has added six new players to the roster for the 2019-20 season, head coach Cami Hubbs announced on Thursday. The six newcomers - made up of both incoming freshmen and transfers - give the Hornets 11 active players, nearly double the roster from last season.
"Adding depth was important to us this offseason, but we still focused on finding the most talented players that would fit into our program," said Hubbs. "We're excited heading into the fall season with a roster that gives us options and can compete up and down the lineup."
Of the six newcomers, just two are from the United States, including one from California and another from Texas. Bulgaria, Ireland, Turkey, and New Zealand are all represented.
In alphabetical order, here are your new 2019 Hornets!
Paige Alter - Fr. - Auckland, New Zealand
Hubbs on Alter: "I am very happy that Paige decided to join us at Sacramento State. She comes from a great tennis family in New Zealand and knows what college tennis is all about. I expect to see Paige have an immediate impact on the program in both singles and doubles competition."
Shauna Casey - Jr. - Dublin, Ireland
Hubbs on Casey: "Shauna has a really great tennis mind and I am excited to see how much she will grow this year in her game. She is one of the most dedicated and fun student-athletes to be around. We are really fortunate to have her skill and her knowledge on this rising team."
Grace Dodd - Fr. - Dallas, Texas
Hubbs on Dodd: "Grace will make an immediate impact on the team with her energetic personality and doubles experience. Her commitment, energy, eagerness - these were all parts of Grace's character that, in addition to her talent, put her high on our list. We're very excited to have her join the Hornet women's tennis family this fall!"
Megan Tagaloa - So. - Riverside, Calif.
Hubbs on Tagaloa: "Megan will join us with one year of experience at the Division I level already behind her so we expect her to be able to jump right in and compete for a spot in the top six. I know she is glad to be back in California and we are lucky to have her! I'm eager to see the immediate impact she will have on this team."
Ege Tomey - Sr. - Izmir, Turkey
Hubbs on Tomey: "Ege brings to our program an incredible wealth of experience in our region and its players. She was one of the best junior players in Turkey growing up and brought that talent here. She will definitely be a positive and influential player for this team from the day she arrives."
Tsveti Yotova - Fr. - Sofia, Bulgaria
Hubbs on Yotova: "We are very excited to have Tsveti join our program for the fall. In addition to valuable experience, Tsveti brings yet another persepctive to our rising team. Her impact will be noticable both on and off the court and we are eager to have her here."
These six additions, plus five returners from last season, give the Hornets 11 players on the active roster. Among the returners to the 2019-20 roster are last season's wins leader, junior Jenna Dorian, who was named a Big Sky second team selection. Sophomore Jayden Nielsen, a Big Sky honorable mention, also returns.
