WOMEN’S TENNIS EARNS TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL ITA ACADEMIC AWARDS

2018-19 ITA All-Academic Women's Tennis (Div. I)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team and two of its players have earned academic awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

As a team, the Hornets earned the ITA All-Academic Team award, available to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale) during the 2018-19 academic year. The Hornets earned the team award for the eighth time in the last nine years and had two individuals named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

As a team, the Hornets currently have a 3.378 cumulative grade point average, the second-highest of any of the 21 sports on campus (Men's Tennis, 3.469). The women's tennis team posted a 3.390 GPA during the 2018-19 academic year.

Individually, senior Sofi Wicker and freshman Jayden Nielsen were both named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Wicker finished her senior campaign with a 12-7 record, the second-best mark on the team, and won four match-clinching points over the course of the season. Nielsen, a true freshman, played to an 11-7 overall record, including a 6-3 mark in conference singles play. She was named a Big Sky Honorable Mention at the end of the season.

The ITA Scholar-Athlete honor was the fourth for Wicker, who has achieved at least a 3.50 GPA in every semester at Sacramento State. It is the first award for Nielsen.

To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
