SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State (7-9, 5-2 Big Sky) celebrated Senior Day on Saturday as they took the courts to face Montana State (3-12, 1-7 Big Sky). The Hornets capped their Senior Day celebration with a convincing 5-2 win over the visiting Bobcats.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 7-9 overall and 5-2 in the Big Sky. After Saturday's action around the league, Sacramento State's five league wins are tied for second most in the conference.
Montana State falls to 3-12 overall, including 1-7 against the league.
The Hornets took the early lead, going up 1-0 after winning the doubles point. The duo of Jayden Nielsen and Frana Ugarkovic took their match at the No. 3 doubles position, 6-1, before the pair of Carolina Chernyetsky and Jenna Dorian won at the No. 2 position, 6-2.
Montana State evened the score, taking the first singles match at the No. 2 spot, but from there it was all Hornets as Ugarkovic, Chernyetsky, Dorian, and Wicker each won their singles matches, in order.
At No. 6, Ugarkovic won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Chernyetsky followed at the No. 4 spots, 6-1, 6-4.
With Sacramento State leading, 3-1, sophomore Jenna Dorian clinched the match for the Hornets with a 6-3, 6-0 win at the No. 3 position. For Dorian, the win was her ninth straight singles victory as she improved to 11-3 in singles play overall this season. She is a perfect 7-0 in singles play this season.
Wicker followed Dorian, winning her match at the No. 5 position, also in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
The longest match of the day belonged to Sacramento State's number one, Mara Gonzalez. Gonzalez fell at the top spot after a grueling 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 11-9, three-set match.
The Hornets will play their third match in four days when they travel to Saint Mary's College for a Sunday afternoon match.
