WOMEN’S TENNIS RALLIES FOR 4-3 WIN OVER NORTHERN ARIZONA

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State hosted the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks Monday morning at the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. For the second straight time for the Hornets, the match came down to the final singles match of the day. Jayden Nielsen battled to a three-set win, clinching the match, 4-3, for the Hornets.

With the match even, 3-3, Nielsen came back from a 1-0 deficit to win at the No. 3 position, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, clinching the final point and the match, 4-3, for Sacramento State.

It was the only three-set match of the afternoon and was the freshman's team-leading fifth singles win of the year.

"Jayden won the clincher, but the entire team fought so hard on Monday," said head coach Cami Hubbs after the win. "They've continued to battle all season and this was a very well-deserved win. I'm so proud of this team."

The afternoon started with a doubles point for the Hornets. After the duo of Carolina Chernyetsky and Frana Ugarkovic dropped the No. 3 doubles match, the Hornets rallied back to take the Nos. 1 and 2 matches to clinch the point.

At the No. 1 position, the duo of Jenna Dorian and Nielsen won, 6-3, before the pair or Maria Gonzalez and Soft Wicker clinched the point at the No. 2 spot, also 6-3.

Northern Arizona evened the score, taking the first singles point at the No. 1 position, but Gonzalez, playing at No. 2, cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win to put the Hornets back ahead.

The Lumberjacks countered by taking back-to-back points at the Nos. 5 and 6 spots and taking a 3-2 lead on the afternoon.

Dorian evened things up with a hard-fought win in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, before Nielsen closed things out with the clincher at the No. 3 position.

With wins in singles play, Dorian, Gonzalez, and Nielsen each improved to 3-0 in conference play so far this season.

Monday's win is Sacramento State's first of the year as they improve to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky play.

After back-to-back home matches, the Hornets will again head back on the road as they take on the Cal State Fullerton Titans in Fullerton on Wednesday. For more information on that and all upcoming Sacramento State women's tennis matches, be sure to visit the 2019 schedule at HornetSports.com.
