WOMEN’S TENNIS MAKES HOME DEBUT, BUT FALLS TO SOUTHERN UTAH, 4-3

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team made their home debut on Friday, welcoming conference foe Southern Utah to the Sacramento State Tennis Courts. Despite playing on their home court for the first time this season, the Hornets (0-5) fell to the visiting Thunderbirds (4-5) by a final score of 4-3.

Doubles play started with a strong win for the Hornets as the pair of Jenna Dorian and Maria Gonzalez, playing in the number one position, rolled to a 6-1 win to begin the afternoon.

Unfortunately, behind them, the pairs of Carolina Chernyetsky/Jayden Nielsen and Frana Ugarkovic/Sofi Wicker fell to their Southern Utah opponents, 6-0, and 6-2, respectively, giving the Thunderbirds the doubles point.

Trailing 1-0 at the start of singles play, it was Dorian again delivering a strong performance as the sophomore cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 singles win at the number four position.

Although Southern Utah clinched the match, winning the next three singles matches, both Maria Gonzalez and Jayden Nielsen battled for come-from-behind wins to pick up two more singles points for the Hornets.

Gonzalez, playing at the number two position, dropped her first set, 3-6, before storming back for a 6-1 win. She outlasted her opponent in the third set, winning 6-4.

A similar situation played out across the way for Nielsen, who found herself trailing after a 3-6 first set in the number three spot. She battled back to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-4, giving the Hornets their third point of the afternoon.

The matchup was the first conference meeting for both teams. The loss dropped the Hornets to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in Big Sky play. The Thunderbirds improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in league.

Sacramento State was scheduled to play another home match tomorrow against San Jose State, but that meeting has already been rescheduled due to rain. The Hornets will now host the Spartans on Wednesday, April 17 at noon.

Instead, Sacramento State will head back on the road for their next match, a March 9 contest at Cal Poly. For more information on that and all upcoming Sacramento State women's tennis matches, be sure to visit the 2019 schedule at HornetSports.com.
