SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Maria Gonzalez and Frana Ugarkovic represented the Sacramento State women's tennis program at its final fall tournament in Southern California. Due to wildfires in southern California and poor air quality, the tournament was moved and then canceled before it could be completed.

Gonzalez and Ugarkovic were the only two players to travel to Northridge for the CSUN invitational over the weekend. The tournament was intended to be a final tune up for two players who had missed earlier tournaments this fall and both put together strong showings before the tournament was ultimately canceled due to poor air quality.

"When we got there we could see the smoke very clearly," said head coach Cami Hubbs. "It was very windy, but it seemed like everything was moving the other direction. On day two (Saturday), though, you could tell it was much worse."

Saturday saw the tournament move an hour south from host institution CSUN to CSU Long Beach where the teams involved continued play. By Sunday, though, even Long Beach was unsuitable for play and the final day of the tournament was canceled.

Before that, both Gonzalez and Ugarkovic put together some impressive wins. In the Singles B Draw, Gonzalez won each of her first two matches, defeating a player from Cal State Fullerton, 6-2, 6-3, before defeating a player from Long Beach, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in what head coach Cami Hubbs described as a "very good win."

She was scheduled to face Miyo Kobiyashi of San Jose State in the draw's semifinals before the tournament was called off.

Ugarkovic also picked up a win in the weather-shortened tournament. After dropping her first match of the weekend, she bounced back with a consolation quarterfinals win over CSLA's Chelsey Ruiz, 6-1, 6-3. Had the tournament continued on Sunday, she would have faced UCR's Tammy Van in the consolation semifinals on Sunday.

Due to the change in venues and a late start on Saturday, only Friday's doubles matches were played. Gonzalez and Ugarkovic played two doubles matches Friday morning, falling to a pair from Long Beach, 6-1, and another duo from UC Riverside, 6-2.

This weekend's tournament was the final fall event for the Sacramento State women's tennis team. The program participated in five total fall events, including the ITA Northwest Regional tournament. The team will now have a break from competition until the start of the regular season on January 20 at San Diego State. The full 2019 women's tennis schedule is online and available now at HornetSports.com.
