MORAGA, Calif. - Shamika Dhar highlighted a strong weekend for the Sacramento State women's tennis team at the annual Saint Mary's Invitational. Dhar won her flight while the team went 10-5 in singles play overall.
Dhar, who opened the weekend in the Singles C draw with teammate Frana Ugarkovic, rolled through her first two opponents, winning back-to-back matches in straight sets.
The semifinal match proved the most challenging as Dhar dropped the first set, 4-6. It was the only singles set she lost all weekend, though, as she bounced back to take the next two and clinch the match.
For the championship match, Dhar took on UC Davis' Jessica Walker, cruising to the victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Four other players participated in the weekend tournament and had a strong showing in singles play as well. Ugarkovic, who also started the weekend in the Singles C draw with Dhar, won her first match against an opponent from Pacific, 6-3, 6-4, before falling in the quarterfinals. Ugarkovic was two wins away from forcing a Hornets-only championship against Dhar.
In the B bracket, both Sofi Wicker and Carolina Chernyetsky each won their first matches of the weekend in the round of 32 before falling in the round of 16. Both finished the weekend 2-1 after winning extra singles matches on Sunday.
Jayden Nielsen, the Hornets' only player in the Singles A bracket, dropped her first match before advancing to the consolation semifinals, where she fell in a hard-fought battle, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5) against Jennifer Timotin from Fresno State.
In doubles play, the duo of Chernyetsky and Nielsen picked up a win against a pair from Santa Clara, 8-4. Dhar and Ugarkovic had less success in the doubles bracket, going without a win in three matches.
"Overall, this was a good tournament for us," said head coach Cami Hubbs Sunday night. "We learned a lot and improved every match."
In total, Sacramento State was a combined 10-5 in singles play and 11-10 overall at the invitational. Full results from all of its singles and doubles matches can be found below.
The tournament at Saint Mary's was Sacramento State's third in the last three weekends, including the Battle in the Bay Classic and simultaneous tournaments at Cal and Colorado last weekend.
"It will be nice to get a little rest this coming week," added Hubbs. "But we're excited to get back to work and practice before going into regionals."
The ITA Northwest Regional is the next tournament for the Hornets, scheduled for Oct. 18-22 at Stanford University. For more details, be sure to visit the 2018-19 Sacramento State women's tennis schedule online at HornetSports.com.
