SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior Ana Loaiza Esquivias was named this week's Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time this season, the conference announced today.
Sacramento State women's tennis (10-11, 8-2 Big Sky) had an incredible week, winning three Big Sky Conference matches in three days, all on the road. Loaiza Esquivias and her 3-0 record at singles play was a major part of that success.
Ana started the three-day, three-match stretch with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 win at the number one singles position on Friday at Southern Utah. She followed that up with another dominating win, 6-2, 6-1, at Weber State, also in the number one singles spot.
The senior's toughest match came in the third match, when she came from behind for a momentum-turning 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over Idaho State's Hristina Cvetkovic in the number one position. The longest individual match in what was a five-hour-plus contest, Ana's win gave the Hornets a much-needed singles point and swung the match to Sacramento State's favor.
In addition to her dominant singles performance, Ana and teammate Sofi Wicker clinched the doubles point for the Hornets against Idaho State, winning 6-4 and securing Sacramento State's first doubles point in eight matches.
For the season, Ana is a team-best 14-6 in singles play, including 7-2 in Big Sky competition. All of her matches have been played at the number one singles position.
The award is her third this season and the seventh overall. As she enters the final two matches of her career, Loaiza Esquivias is 65-26 all-time in singles play, including an incredible 37-4 in conference singles play.
