GULNOVA WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT, BUT HORNETS FALL 4-1 FRIDAY AT SAN JOSE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sofia Gulnova picked up her third straight singles win on Friday, defeating San Jose State's Laura Malsert in straight sets. Unfortunately, her win was the only one of the day as the Sacramento State women's tennis team fell to the Spartans, 4-1.

Gulnova was playing in the No. 3 singles position Friday and picked up her fourthstraight win in the position. She took down San Jose State's Malsert in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. 

Over her last four singles competitions, Gulnova has won eight sets while dropping just two. She has won two of her last four matches in straight sets while winning the other two in three. The sophomore has not dropped a match since February 10 at Colorado. Over her last five, Gulnova is 4-1. 

Her win was the only one of the day for the Hornets as the rest of the team came up emtpy against the Spartans. In doubles play, the team of Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Shamika Dhar and the team of Gulnova and Jenna Dorian both fell 6-2 to give the Spartans the first point of the day. The pairing of Carolina Chernyetsky and Maria Gonzalez went unfinished, despite leading 5-4.

In singles, Chernyetsky fell in the No. 5 singles position in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, before Golnova clinched the Hornets lone point. After that, Dorian fell 6-1, 6-4, and Gonzalez dropped a hard fought match, 7-5, 6-0 as the Spartans clinched the match. 

The Hornets return to Sacramento State tomorrow, Saturday, March 10 to host Cal Poly. The match will begin at 10 am PT at the Sacramento State tennis courts.
