SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior Ana Loaiza Esquivias was named this week's Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced today.
Despite playing just one team match this weekend, Loaiza Esquivias made the most of her time on the court, going 1-0 against some of the nation's top competitors.
In singles play, Loaiza Esquivias went up against #45 Saint Mary's no. 1, Mariia Kozyreva, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The win was huge for Ana, as Kozyreva had just defeated the nation's No. 9 player, Anna Danilina of Florida, on Feb. 23, 2018. Her win gave the Hornets one of their two points on the day.
Prior to that win, Loaiza Esquivias and her partner Carolina Chernyetsky went head-to-head with the Saint Mary's team of Kozyreva and Hind Abdelouahid. Despite the Saint Mary's pair being ranked #35 as a team, Ana and Carolina battled the pair to a 4-4 score before the match was called and left unfinished.
Ana has played every match this season in the No. 1 Singles and No. 1 Doubles position and is a combined 4-3 and 2-3, respectively. She is 2-0 in both singles and doubles play against Big Sky Conference opponents.
The award is the second this season for Loaiza Esquivias and the sixth of her career. As a Hornet, the Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico native is now 55-23 in singles matches and an incredible 32-2 in conference singles play.
