GREELY, Colo. - Just one day after a tough road loss at the University of Colorado, the Sacramento State women's tennis team bounced back with a strong 6-1 win over Big Sky Conference opponent Northern Colorado at the Bears' Work Out West Fitness Center Sunday morning.
"It was great ending the weekend with another conference win today," said head coach Cami Hubbs after the match. "I think we definitely took yesterday's match and used that as fuel for today. We came out strong right from the start and played well all the way through."
Sacramento State started the morning with a win, taking the first doubles match as Ana Loaiza Esquivias and partner Carolina Chernyetsky defeated a pair from Northern Colorado, 6-4. As a pair, Loaiza Esquivias and Chernyetsky are 2-3 in doubles play this season, including a perfect 2-0 in conference matches.
Sofia Gulnova and Sofi Wicker clinched the doubles point shortly after, defeating Northern Colorado's team in the No. 3 spot, also 6-4. The No. 2 doubles match, featuring Jenna Dorian and Maria Gonzalez, went unfinished, with the Hornets pair trailing 5-4.
Sacramento State rolled through singles play, as well, winning five of six matches. Loaiza Esquivias continued her strong senior season, winning in the No. 1 singles spot for the third time this season. She defeated UNC's No. 1 player, Raffa Mora, 6-0, 6-1.
Gonzalez defeated Madeline Doherty 6-3, 6-2, in the singles No. 3 spot just before Gulnova clinched the match for the Hornets, winning 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 4 position.
Dorian gave the Hornets their fifth point of the afternoon, winning her No. 5 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Northern Colorado picked up their first and only point of the afternoon in the No. 2 singles spot as the Bears' Tristen Bryant-Otake defeated Wicker in a thrilling, back-and-forth, three-set match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Frana Ugarkovic rounded out the scoring for Sacramento State with her first win of the regular season, 6-4, 6-2 from the No. 6 singles position.
The Hornets end the weekend roadtrip with a 1-1 split while they remain undefeated in conference play. The Hornets (2-4, 2-0 Big Sky) now have two weeks off before they host St. Mary's at home on Feb. 25.
