SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State senior Ana Loaiza Esquivias was named this week's Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced today.
Loaiza Esquivias went 3-1 this past weekend as Sacramento State split two matches on the road at Minnesota and North Dakota.
On Sunday, Loaiza Esquivias won both her matches, including the clinching match in the team's 5-2 win over North Dakota. In what was the team's first conference match of the year, Loaiza Esquivias defeated North Dakota's No. 1 Carmen Palumbo, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2 in singles play while she and partner Carolina Chernyetsky won the team's first doubles match, 7-6(5).
The senior from Mazatlan, Mexico, won her first singles match of the weekend on Saturday, defeating Minnesota's No. 1 Caroline Ryba in two sets (6-2, 6-2) for the team's only point in their 6-1 loss.
The recognition is the first of the year for Sacramento State women's tennis and the first this season for Loaiza Esquivias. A senior, this is her fifth career Player of the Week award. She was named the Big Sky Women's Tennis Player of the Week four times last season as a junior.
