FRESNO, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's tennis team traveled to Fresno to take on a strong Fresno State team in their season opener, falling 6-1 to the Bulldogs.
The Hornets fell in each of the three doubles matches, giving Fresno an early 1-0 lead. Despite a 6-0 first doubles match, the pair of Sofi Wicker and Maria Gonzalez and pair of Jenna Dorian and Frana Ugarkovic each battled their opponents, taking each to 6-4 decisions.
Although Sacramento State scored in every singles match, it was all Fresno in the singles competition, as well. Ana Loaizia Esquivias proved a tough match for Fresno's Emma Wilson, taking the match to a tiebreaker set before falling 10-8 in the tiebreaker.
After that, Fresno continued to roll until the number six match, when Carolina Chernyetsky defeated Abbey Watanabe 6-2, 6-3, giving the Hornets their only point of the day.
Despite falling 6-1, Sacramento State felt good about their season opener against a strong Fresno State team.
"Fresno is a really strong team and I thought we competed very well," said head coach Cami Hubbs. "I know we can come out stronger in doubles, but I'm extremely pleased with our singles.
"Though all the matches didn't go our way today, the fight was there and I'm really excited to see what the future holds for our team."
Sacramento State continues their season opening road trip next Saturday, Jan. 27 at Minnesota. The match begins at 8:00 am PT.
