NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – In another close match Sacramento State ended up on the short end of a 4-3 final against UC Irvine on Saturday in Orange County.
After pulling out a 4-3 win at San Diego State on Friday, Sacramento State (4-9) came up one point short in a match that came down to the No. 1 singles spot for the second straight day. UC Irvine (3-10) picked up its second win in as many days as the Hornets took their fifth 4-3 loss this season.
The Hornets earned the doubles point on Saturday with a 6-3 win from junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias and freshman Sofia Gulnova at No. 1 and an identical result at No. 2 by the duo of senior Andie Mouzes and freshman Karina Vyrlan. The No. 3 match was 5-5 when the point was clinched and went unfinished.
Sacramento State cruised to straight-set singles wins at No. 5 and 6. Sophomore Sofia Wicker dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jacquelin Tsodikova at No. 5 and Gulnova had a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Hali Dickson at No. 6.
UC Irvine got straight set wins at No. 2 and 3, and at No. 4 Ashlynn Hall outlasted Mouzes 6-4, 7-6 (5) to tie the match 3-3. Loaiza Esquivias and UC Irvine's Constance Branstine played to a third set tiebreak at No. 1, with the Hornet leader coming back from down a set and 5-1 in the second to force a super tiebreak. Branstine was just able to overcome Loaiza Esquivias, winning 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8.
The Hornets return to Big Sky play next week hosting Weber State and Idaho State in a home doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. next Saturday.
