GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's tennis team opened the 2017 spring season with a commanding 7-0 victory over San Francisco on Friday afternoon at Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center.
The Hornets swept all three doubles matches and all three singles spots, opening their season with a win over the Dons for the second consecutive season. Three of the six Hornet starters were victorious in their first spring collegiate matches.
Sacramento State clinched the doubles point quickly, with freshman Sofia Gulnova and sophomore Sofia Wicker beginning with a 6-0 sweep at No. 3. Senior Andie Mouzes and redshirt freshman Carolina Chernyetsky won 6-4 at No. 2 and junior Ana Loaiza Esquivias and freshman Karina Vyrlan outlasted USF's Emily Maxfield and Genevieve McCloskey, 7-5, at No. 1 to complete a doubles sweep.
Gulnova made quick work of Sarina Chhabra at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win. Loaiza Esquivias also won in straight sets, beating Anna Sokiran 6-2, 6-1 to win her first collegiate match playing at No. 1. The Hornets clinched the match victory when Chernyestky completed a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Amber Del Rosario.
The remaining three singles matches all went three sets but the Hornets were victorious in each of them. Mouzes beat McCloskey at No. 3, Vyrlan topped Maxfield at No. 2, and Wicker outlasted Joselyn Treyes Albarracin 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 at No. 4 to complete the shutout.
Sacramento State returns to action hosting Fresno State at 1 p.m. Sunday. That match will also be played at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center with rain again in the forecast.
