SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In the final home match for Hornet seniors Sophie Lohscheidt and Katharina Knoebl, Lohscheidt earned a win in singles and Knoebl won in doubles but it wasn't enough as No. 43 Saint Mary's earned the doubles point and three singles wins for a 4-1 victory on Sunday on the Sacramento State Tennis Courts.
Playing again without injured sophomores Jennifer Nguyen and Daria Savchenko, Sacramento State (9-12) opened the match with a quick 8-0 doubles win at No. 2 from Knoebl and freshman Alina Soltanici over Jamie Pawid and Elizabeth Searl. No. 43 Saint Mary's (10-6) rebounded with 8-4 wins at both No. 1 and 3, however, to earn the doubles point.
The Gaels claimed the first singles win at No. 1, where No. 8-ranked senior Jenny Julien, the highest ranked singles player the Hornets have faced this season, topped Soltanici 6-0, 6-1. Saint Mary's also had a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 before Lohscheidt closed her home career with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Danielle Flores at the No. 2 match.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, following the Lohscheidt win Saint Mary's No. 101-ranked Catherine Leduc finished off a 6-2, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot to clinch the win for the Gaels. Saint Mary's led 1-0 and was up in the second set at both the No. 3 and No. 5 matches when the team victory was clinched.
Sacramento State closes Big Sky play on the road next weekend, facing both Montana and Montana State on Friday and playing at Northern Arizona on Sunday.
