WOMEN’S TENNIS OUTLASTED BY UC DAVIS 4-3

DAVIS, Calif. – In a match that came down to the final singles spot, UC Davis senior Melissa Kobayakawa earned a hard fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Hornet senior Katharina Knoebl to clinch a 4-3 victory for the Aggies on Sunday in Davis.

The match was tightly contested form the onset in doubles play. UC Davis was able to clinch the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 and an 8-5 win at No. 2, but the Hornet duo of Knoebl and freshman Alina Soltanici was able to pull out an 8-5 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot.

UC Davis got the first singles result with a straight set win at No. 1 but the Hornets then won the next three matches to be completed. Senior Sophie Lohscheidt was victorious 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, sophomore Daria Savchenko won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, and freshman Deimante Bulatovaite claimed a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6 to put the Hornets up 3-2.

Soltanici and Aggie junior Layla Sanders battled into a third set at No. 2 with Sanders holding on for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win. Kobayakawa then earned the three-set victory at No. 4 to give the Aggies the win.

The loss was the third 4-3 setback for the Hornets this season. Sacramento State dropped to 1-5 while UC Davis improved to 4-5 and picked up five points in the ScholarShare Causeway Cup. 

Sacramento State heads to Seattle next weekend to face TCU on Friday and Washington on Sunday.
