Women's Tennis

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — The last time that the Sacramento State women's tennis team lost a match to a Big Sky Conference opponent the current Hornet freshmen were six years old. With a 99 match win streak on the line, Sacramento State surpassed the century mark with a pair of wins on Sunday at SpareTime Indoor Tennis Center.

The Hornets defeated Northern Colorado, 6-1, in the morning before blanking North Dakota, 7-0, in the afternoon for their 100th and 101st consecutive victory over a Big Sky foe. The team's last loss against a Big Sky team came in a 4-1 setback against Weber State on April 14, 2001.
Against Northern Colorado, the Hornets won the first two doubles matches, 8-1, to secure the point. The team went on to sweep all three doubles matches with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Momentum carried over to singles play where the top four matches were decided in quick fashion in favor of the Hornets. Jennifer Nguyen posted the first point with a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 2. Rebeca Delgado won 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 and Katharina Knoebl gave the team the pivotal fourth point with a 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 4. Olivia Boija also won in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-2, decision at No. 4.
Sacramento State dominated North Dakota in the afternoon, surrendering just four games in the three doubles matches and 18 in the six singles contests.
In doubles, the No. 2 team of Knoebl and Nguyen and the No. 3 pairing of Sophie Lohscheidt and Andrea Gomez Carus each won, 8-1. Delgado and Boija were done closely after with an 8-2 win at No. 1.
Sacramento State won all six singles matches, with five coming in straight sets. The lone exception was at No. 3 where Boija dropped her first set against Stephanie Biehn (6-3) before rallying for a 6-1 win the second set and winning the super set (10-6).
Delgado, Nguyen, Knoebl, Siobhan Ryan Bovey and Gomez Carus provided the remaining five victories.
Sacramento State will next play Long Beach State on April 4 at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.
