Junior midfielder Katie DeClercq recorded a career-high two goals to give the Sacramento State women’s soccer team a 3-2 victory over Idaho, Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field. It was the Hornets’ first win of the 2002 season and also head coach Karen Hanks’ first win at the Division I level. Sacramento State is now 1-4-1 overall, while Idaho fell to 2-4 on the season.
Sacramento State grabbed the early lead when senior forward Lisa Wrightsman scored within the first minute for the Hornets off an assist from Jaymie Kocer. Wrightsman outran the Vandal defense and past Vandal goalkeeper Jenell Miller for the score. Miller recorded 13 saves for the afternoon.
Idaho’s Sarah April evened the score in the eighth minute with an assist by Vandal teammate Adriane Kehl.
DeClercq, a native of San Lorenzo, Calif., headed two goals past Miller to seal the victory. Freshman midfielders Kelly Law and Linda Sanchez were each credited for an assist off of their crosses to DeClercq in the 52nd and 77th minutes, respectively.
Seely, a native of West Linn, Ore., helped solidify the win with nine saves as Idaho put the pressure on in the second period with 10 shots. April was able to close the gap for Idaho with her second goal of the contest in the 87th minute. Katie Quinn was credited with the assist. The Hornets remained strong by outshooting the Vandals in the contest 27 to 17.
Sacramento State will return to Hornet Soccer Field to host Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader with the Hornet men’s soccer team.
