9/26/2010

Leah Larot's goal against Seattle gives her a team-best seven scores and 15 points this season.

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Sacramento State women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Seattle University, 3-2, in double overtime on Sunday afternoon in the second and final game of the Seattle University Tournament. The Hornets fall to 3-6-1 with the loss while the Redhawks improve to 7-4-0.

After Erin Tarantino scored with less than two minutes to play to force overtime, Seattle pulled out the win with a goal in the 105th minute by Ava Ames, her second of the game. The Redhawks won the tournament with wins over the Hornets and Cal State Bakersfield. Leah Larot and Elece McBride were named to the all-tournament team.

Larot continued her scoring tear this season as she knocked in a goal off a Jordan Carlberg cross in the 33rd minute. But Seattle would answer with two scores, one from Ames in the 45th minute and one by Kassandra Riozzi in the 74th minute.

But Tarantino would find the back of the net in the 89th minute after she corraled a deflected ball deep in Seattle's zone and blasted a shot to the right side of the keeper.

The tie would come undone in the second overtime on Ames second score of the game, off an assist from Monique Escalera and Heather Thomas.

Sacramento State had a 6-3 edge in corner kicks while Seattle had the 17-13 advantage in shots. Both goalies made three saves each.

The Hornets' next game will be back home on Friday, Oct. 8 versus Montana in the Big Sky Conference opener. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. Sacramento State will also host Eastern Washington that weekend, with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday, Oct. 10.
