WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS SEASON OPENER 1-0 TO RIVAL UC DAVIS

8/20/2010

Felecia Novoa and the Hornets lost to rival UC Davis 1-0 on Friday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
The Sacramento State women's soccer team fell 1-0 to rival UC Davis in the 2010 season opener on Friday night. The Aggies took the lead with a score in the fifth minute and held off a Hornet rally to win the soccer version of the Causeway Classic. Sacramento State drops to 0-1 on the season while UC Davis improves to 1-0.

Just 4:48 into the game, UC Davis took a corner kick and placed the ball into Lisa Kemp at the near post. After a couple dribbles she slotted a pass in front of the net where Allison Kelly redirected the ball from five yards out past Sacramento State keeper Savannah Abercrombie for the only goal of the game.

UC Davis had a 6-1 edge in shots in the first half but the Hornets came storming back in the second period, controlling the ball for much of the half. Sacramento State took 10 shots in the second half compared to just one for UC Davis but head coach Randy Dedini's squad could not get a ball past UC Davis keeper Maria Magana, who took over after halftime for Kathleen Brandl.

Victoria Ramirez was the main aggressor for Sacramento State, coming off the bench to take four of the Hornets' 11 total shots and their only shot on goal.

UC Davis had a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks and a 10-15 edge in fouls. Abercormbie made three saves in goal while Magana had the lone stop for the Aggies.

Sacramento State will play again this weekend, hosting San Diego State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Hornet Soccer Field. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for ages 13-17 and free for children under 12 and Sacramento State students with their OneCard. Parking for soccer fans is available at no charge in Lot 1.
