WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS 2-0 DECISION TO WEBER STATE

10/23/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to the Weber State Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 23 at Hornet Soccer Field.

With the loss the Hornets fall to 7-5-4, 2-2-1 in Big Sky Conference play, while the Wildcats improve to 6-9-0, 2-3-0 in the Big Sky.

In a game that saw the Hornets post a 20-13 advantage in shots and a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, Weber State would make the most of their attempts, putting eight shots on goal, which was the same output as the Hornets. After dodging a shot by Hornet junior Cori Shreve in the 11th minute that was headed out by a defender and a bullet of a shot that hit the crossbar by Sacramento State senior Katelin Hopping in the 20th minute, the Wildcats would take an early lead in the 27th minute. Following a two-footed tackle in the box, Jessie Baddley went lower left on her penalty kick attempt, beating Hornet sophomore 'keeper Savannah Abercrombie for her fourth goal of the season, giving her club a 1-0 lead.

Sacramento State had chances to tie the score before the half, but freshman Kelsey O'Donnell had her 42nd minute shot saved by Rebecca Ritchie, and senior Ashley Rosenbery and freshman Megan Burg pushed attempts wide in the halves final minute.

At intermission, the Hornets held an 8-5 advantage in shots, and a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The second 45 minutes saw the Hornets come out strong offensively, with O'Donnell putting back-to-back shots on goal in the 51st and 52nd minutes, with the latter being punched over the goal by Ritchie.

Weber State would put the match away, however, in the 71st minute as Collete Simmons scored her third goal of the season, off of assists from Baddley and Kelly Robinson, to make the score 2-0. The Wildcats had an opportunity to stretch the lead to 3-0 in the 72nd minute, but Baddley had her second PK attempt of the match stopped by Abercrombie.

O'Donnell led the Hornets with four shots, including three on goal, while Burg collected three shots. Abercrombie posted five saves in goal, while the Hornets also added a team save.

Baddley posted four shots, including three on goal to lead the Wildcats, while three of her teammates posted two shots apiece. Ritchie collected seven saves in goal for Weber State.

The Hornets return to action this Sunday, Oct. 25 as they host the Idaho State Bengals. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Hornet Soccer Field.
