8/16/2009

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State women's soccer team opened its 2009 season with a 0-0 exhibition draw with the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors on Sunday, Aug. 16 at Hornet Soccer Field.

The Hornets outshot the Warriors throughout, finishing with a 21-10 advantage in shots and a 6-3 margin in shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Sacramento State, however, had three golden chances just slip through their hands.

In the 34th minute, senior Kim Kemper dribbled through defenders on the right side of the box and pushed a shot toward the near post that was stopped impressively by Warrior 'keeper Millie Brown, who reached back across her body to make the save. The second chance came in the 78th minute, as senior Danielle Holloway had a goal negated following an offsides call, keeping the game scoreless at 0-0.

The final chance game in the waining seconds of the first overtime period, when sophomore Elece McBride had an open shot at goal with one second left go just high.

Sophomore Savannah Abercrombie played the entire 110 minutes in goal for the Hornets, posting a clean sheet with three saves. Brown and Jessica Sitarz split time in front of the net for the Warriors,  posting three saves each.

Kemper and freshman Megan Burg led the Hornets in shots with three apiece, with Kemper putting one on frame and Burg connecting on two on goal. Lisa Garcia led Cal State Stanislaus with three shots, while seven of her teammates posted a lone shot apiece.

The two teams finished even in fouls with six a side, while the Hornets were unable to capitalize on a five corner kick advantage (10-5).

Sacramento State will finish their exhibition schedule with a road contest at Chico State on Tuesday, Aug. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
